Tokyo – Tsuta Japanese Soba Noodles
Vending Machine?
Picky Eats – Tsuta was a great place! From what I saw, there were long lines. My parents had gotten tickets for line early. When we reached the front, there was a lone vending machine, but this machine didn’t spit out food. It spat out tickets! There were numerous buttons on it that showed different pictures of ramen and sides. With the help of translate, I deciphered what I wanted on the machine. When we reached the counter, there was a small divot in the table. I placed my ticket there, the chef took the ticket, and I got a steaming hot bowl of ramen in return! It was delicious. I would come here anytime. Make sure that you come early!
WHAT THE PARENTS THINK
You might be asking why am I showing you a vending machine. Keep reading.
Japan has one of the most Michelin Star Restaurants in the world. They have super fancy Michelin Star Restaurants down to regular restaurants. Tsuta is a soba noodle restaurant with one Michelin star and I had to try it.
If you want to eat here you’ll need to go and make a reservation. And no, you can’t make the reservation online. I woke up at 5 am to take a train from Roppongi to this place (30 min) in the pouring rain. When I got there around 6, I was the 3rd person waiting in the rain. Once the owner showed up around 1 to 2 hours the line was 20 deep. They give you a ticket and give you a time to come back to eat. I head back to my train feeling very excited to get a table.
This is a very small restaurant. At most 15 barstool chairs in front of the chef. Don’t come here if you have a large party. We had 4 in our group and they had to split us up. You could eat together, but you’re going to have to wait longer. Don’t ask too many questions. Don’t risk not getting any truffle soba. It’s just like the soup nazi, “No Soup for You!”
Once your number is up, you go to the vending machine and select which soba you want. The vending machine looks scary. But there are pictures of the noodles, the rest are just condiments and appetizers. Pay and then they will seat you. Was all this effort worth it. ABSOLUTELY!!
