Gateways Summer School – Gateways is a summer program at San Diego Jewish Academy. There are schedules with 6 classes a day for younger kids and 4 classes a day for older. There is also an option to only attend for half a day. There are many different classes, ranging from marine biology to stained glass. The selection of classes changes every year with a child’s age. The classes are very in-depth, and have many fun hands-on activities.
At lunch time, the kids eat outside under the blazing sun. Be sure to bring sunscreen. This allows kids to sit with their friends, however, no meat is allowed. Their is a snack table, but it only contains normal vending-machine food like chips.
There is a nurse at Gateways, but he/she only does basic first aid such as applying bandages. They will not administer medication.Â
Gateways is a great place to send your kid to with a lunch if he/she does not need to administer medication before lunch.
PARENT REVIEW – My child has been going to Gateways School for 3 + summers. All kids have different classes each hour and the curriculum is engaging.
There are some negatives. The school is on a campus that doesn’t allow any meat for lunch. That could be a challenge if your child is a diabetic. But you should be able to request for accommodations for this.
Pickup and Parking can be a challenge if you come late.
They do have a nurse assistant on site, but they’re not setup to provide too much assistance if your child is diabetic.
