Francis Parker is a private school serving grades K-12. They have multiple campuses serving different grades. At the Linda Vista location, which is the middle school campus, I took a summer course that resembles a typical all-classes day (also known as single period) in middle school, however, with much more fun added. The teachers here are very helpful and encourage kids to enjoy school (at least during the summer). I took three classes at Francis Parker: Woodshop /Woodworking Algebra Jazz Band
Woodshop was a class filled with hands-on creativity. Before students begin to build their own project, there is a safety test with all of the tools. Once this test is passed, the kids are unleashed to come up with ideas. These ideas are turned into pieces of hand crafted glory. And what kid doesn’t like working with huge power tools?
Algebra may be boring during the school year, but not at Francis Parker! The teacher has a way of making everything fun, whether it’s learning about slope by splatting cockroaches with a slipper or coding games on Scratch to learn about logic.
Jazz Band was a chance to interact with other musicians of different ages. Even if a student doesn’t play an instrument, they will learn! At the end of the summer course, there is a concert for the parents to enjoy and for the students to show off all of their hard work.
Francis Parker has a very helpful nurse that is accommodating and able to administer medication if necessary. Also, the cafeteria was superb, with skilled chefs cooking up dining wonders. Who needs microwave orange chicken when you can have chicken tikka masala with steamed veggies or spaghetti carbonara with rosemary focaccia? Dig in!
PARENT REVIEW – Francis Parker met all my expectations above and more. Please note my child’s needs can be very different than yours.
My child is on a Dexcom G6 with a tandem t:slim X2 pump. He has a cell phone and is able to bolus himself at lunch and knows how to treat himself when he’s high or low. He also knows when to ask for help.
Lunch is included as part of the summer camp. No other camp that I found in San Diego included this. This is a great benefit. But for a diabetic, it could be a challenge. But Francis Parker made it very easy for us. I was able to work with their food services department to figure out carbohydrate information on a week to week basis. All my child had to do is weigh the amount of food, and punch it in to the pump
This was a game changer for my son. He was able to eat just like any other kid going to camp
Update – Please check back to this page in late May, early June. If you do choose to send your child to Francis Parker, I might be able to provide the 2020 Summer Camp Meal Plan once it’s available.
