Many of the YMCA camps follow a basic structure: Do the camp’s intended purpose for 1-2 hour then do group games in the hot sun for the rest of the day. The actual camp activity is not very in-depth. The group games can get boring and need constant reapplication of sunscreen.
Lunch is not provided at the YMCA, but there is a designated eating area. Overall, the YMCA camps are more of a day care than a summer camp. Drop your kid off here only if necessary.
PARENT REVIEW – Please keep in mind the review is based on a 12 year old 7th grader that has gone to pretty much all the camps around San Diego since he was a 1st grader. If he were to have been asked as a 1st -3rd grader, he would’ve gave the Y a very high score.
The YMCA is a very good starter camp. They have a large offering of camps. If you’re planning to do a specialty camp, the specialty instruction itself usually last 3 hours of a full day camp. The rest of the camp is just general camp. If your child has special medical requirements or needs, they do have medical staff. But just not to the point where I’m fully comfortable. Lunch isn’t provided. Drop off and pick up is organized but could be chaotic if you pick up the same time as everyone else.
